What is radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas that causes cancer. Zanesville Ohio has high radon
gas levels that can be reduced by installing a radon reduction system. Over the
years we have tested high radon levels and installed radon mitigation systems
for homeowners in Muskingum, Perry, Licking, Guernsey, Washington and
surrounding counties. Radon is found in rock, soil, water, some building
materials, and natural gas. You can't see, taste, or smell it - the only way to
know if your Zanesville home has elevated radon gas is to test it.
What are the health effects of radon exposure?
Over time, exposure to radon can cause lung
cancer. Radon causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the U.S. It
is the second leading cause of lung cancer, after tobacco smoking. People who
smoke have an even higher risk of lung cancer from radon exposure than people
who don't smoke.
Radon exposure doesn't cause symptoms. Unless your Zanesville home or office is
tested for high radon levels, you may not realize that you are being exposed to
dangerous levels of Muskingum County radon until you or someone in your family
is diagnosed with lung cancer.
If you are buying or selling a home, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the Surgeon General’s Office strongly recommends that you obtain the current radon level of the home. Radon is present everywhere, but is most dangerous in your home, since that is where you and your family have the longest exposure.
Testing is the only way to find out what your home’s radon level is.
About 1 in 2 homes in Ohio have enough radon to pose a SIGNIFICANT risk to the occupants. You cannot predict the levels based on state, local, and neighborhood measurements. Do not rely on other radon test results taken in other homes near you to estimate the radon level in your home. Homes that are next to each other can have different indoor radon levels. Radon can be found in all types of homes, old or new and houses with or without basements. In fact any home with ground contact has the potential for having high radon levels
